What is the Express Entry Program?

The Express Entry program is an innovative and points-based immigration system introduced by the Canadian government to manage and select candidates for three federal economic immigration programs:

  1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP): For skilled workers with foreign work experience who wish to immigrate to Canada permanently.

  2. Canadian Experience Class (CEC): For individuals with skilled work experience in Canada who want to transition to permanent residence.

  3. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP): For skilled tradespersons with work experience in certain eligible trades.

How Does Express Entry Work?

The Express Entry system operates on a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), assigning points to candidates based on various factors such as age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and adaptability. Candidates with the highest CRS scores are invited to apply for permanent residence through regular Express Entry draws conducted by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

Eligibility for Express Entry

To be eligible for Express Entry, candidates must meet the requirements of at least one of the three federal economic immigration programs mentioned above. Specific eligibility criteria vary for each program but generally include:

  1. Skilled Work Experience: A minimum number of years of full-time skilled work experience in a designated occupation (NOC skill level 0, A, or B).

  2. Language Proficiency: Proficiency in English or French demonstrated through approved language tests.

  3. Education: A post-secondary degree, diploma, or certificate from a recognized Canadian institution or foreign equivalent.

  4. Admissibility: Candidates must be admissible to Canada, meaning they should not have any serious criminal convictions or medical issues that would hinder their entry into the country.

The Express Entry Application Process

To start the Express Entry process, candidates need to create an online profile and provide detailed information about their skills, education, work experience, language proficiency, and other factors. Based on the information provided, candidates receive a CRS score and are entered into the Express Entry pool.

Candidates with high CRS scores are regularly invited to apply for permanent residence through Express Entry draws. Once invited, candidates have 60 days to submit a complete application for permanent residence.
